I’m perfectly fine with the sequel not deviating too far from what made the first modern Jumanji work. I know The Next Level isn’t getting the rave reviews of its predecessor, and that’s clearly because it goes through so many of the same motions, but you know what? I’m okay with that. The very end mid-credits scene is worth staying for as well, as it very clearly sets up what’s coming in Jumanji 4 most likely in holiday 2021. It’s even a little bit emotional at the end. The addition of two grumpy old men is the main new gimmick in the movie, but there’s lots of exciting action scenes and other funny bits that I found endearing and entertaining. Eventually Bethany finds her way back to Jumanji as well, though I won’t get into any more late-game spoilers. He has similar goons doing his dirty work, and the whole thing plays out pretty similarly to Welcome To The Jungle, with some twists and turns as they track down Spencer who is in the avatar Ming, a sneaky burglar who also happens to be an Asian woman (Awkwafina). Jurgen the Brutal (played by Game of Thrones alum Rory McCann) is another 2-dimensional video game villain, though it’s fun to see McCann in the role. This time around they once again have to get back a stone from an evil villain. He’s brash, getting into fights when he’s told to lay low, and basically getting everyone killed over and over again. He has none of Spencer’s hesitation once he realizes what’s going on. Johnson is great as a more rascally Bravestone. The adventure kicks off from there, and the humor hits a lot of the same notes as Welcome to the Jungle, though it’s pretty funny to have Bravestone and Mouse as the two grumpy old men.
